  • A Planet Where Crawfish Evolved From Man?

The Third First Annual SDMEDIA.NET crawfish boil was held this past weekend. What was supposed to happen at Mission Bay Park would up happening at a friend’s house due to rain, hail, sleet, snow, and freezing wind.

The boil was a rain or shine event, but hail and freezing wind? Well, that’s what happened. it turns out that I was not the only person crazy enought to be out in the weather at this time. There was a St. Patrick’s Day 5k and 10k run scheduled for 7:45am. This picture shows some of the folks huddled under the gazebo during a hail storm. They all left around 730am, ran for an hour or so in the freezing rain, and went home. I, on the other hand, was stupid enough to stay our there in the weather until 10:00am, when I finally said “f*** it” and went with the backup plan.

Well, a friend offered his house as a backup plan, and boy howdy was it needed. Still, I was in for more surprises, when it turned out that 96% of the crawfish I ordered turned up DEAD (You can’t boil dead crawfish, bad for your health ya know). Of the 110 lbs I ordered from a company which MAY be named later, only 5 lbs was cookable.

What WAS cook-able was very good, and there were some big ole crawdaddys in the mix. After a few rounds of Hot Buttered Rum, Cornbread, spiced veggies, more hot buttered rum, and a whole mess of crawfish, everyone was happy. Except that instead of being able to ‘feast’ 35 people, I was only able to provide ‘appetizer’ plates of mudbugs. Still, I’ll try again next year, maybe even at my house, if I can get all of the videotape and other gizmos moved around.
